Renovating Apartment for A Married Couple
Architects from the Sinato studio under the direction of Chikaro Ono carried out a renovation of the apartment in the 26-year-old residential complex of Yokohama city in Japan.
The total area of the apartment is 64 square meters. meter.
Instead of creating a single unit in which the main residential functions were concentrated, the designers decided to organize the space in such a way that different zones smoothly flow from one to another, creating a single residential area.
In their opinion, this approach will provide residents with maximum freedom in a limited space.
The main part of the apartment is an open L-shaped space, which with the help of two south-western windows fills with light and clean air all the dwelling.
The wooden partition repeats the L-shaped form of the main zone and is also part of the furniture: it can store books and other things, sit and even ride - thanks to this multifunctionality this element has become a unifying symbol of the whole space.
The common area also includes a kitchen and a plot called by the designers themselves "inner terrace" - this is a spacious and well-lit area, which also serves as a "buffer" between the bedroom and the rest of the apartment.
An interesting solution was to take out the washbasin from the deaf, windowless part of the bathroom into a common, light area.
Thus, the whole space is organized in a circle and is closed by a bearing wall, on either side of which there are a bedroom and a dressing room.
